Well, the highway north was open by 8:30 am on Thursday so we pulled out headed for Watson Lake…our entry into the Yukon Territory. We did not see any wildlife today…maybe the one mule deer but I was not able to get a picture.
Here are Chuck and Lorraine passing us on the road…we drive slower than the rest of the folks so we are always the last ones in.
I was driving much of the morning until we got into an area where the fog became just too much…Bob is so cool he had to take over while I bit off the rest of my fingernails. Our visibility at some point was about a foot behind us. There were also places where we had no lines on the road. You have to remember that this is all mountainous terrain at this point, at least I think it was.
These are shots taken along the way.
The 100 maximum speed is kilometers, not miles…still, don’t think they are going to make it.
The little black spot on the left side of the road is a big black bear! Unfortunately, we can’t back up in the motorhome towing the car.
We spent the night at Watson’s Lake and before leaving Friday morning we walked over the Sign Post Forest. The tradition of nailing up a sign telling where you are from was started by a US Army soldier while working on the Alaska Highway back in the 1940s. Today there are over 62,000 signs. We may be smart enough to have one prepared on our way back.
Bob walked up to the area and right in front of us was a sign posted by folks from Auburn, IN…Bob’s hometown. Small world.
After leaving Watson Lake we headed to Whitehorse. We stopped for lunch at the great little restaurant called Dawson Peaks. We shared a great burger and homemade Bumble Berry Pie…yum! As you can see, they were not terribly busy. Our good luck is that quite a few of these types of places have free WiFi.
Back on the road with full tummies, we are headed for Whitehorse, YT.
Moving on.
