May 30, 2012 Florence, OR

As usual, on the first of our two days off, we headed into Corvallis to take care of errands, grocery shopping and such.  We had to have a small nick in our car windshield repaired and some routine service done on the car…oh yes, and a stop at one of the quilt shops.  I needed to find material for the backing of a quilt I have just finished.  Weather has been just beautiful these last few days.

The flowers and shrubs are just lovely in the area…especially the rhododendrons.

Today we headed west on US Hwy 34 over to the coast and turned south.  We passed this plot of “Christmas” trees that had been cut down and they had evidently been down for some time.  There are lots of tree farms in the area.  I have to say that the drive was so pretty…we were able to see a lot more of the ocean than we did when we drove north last week.

We stopped in the town of Waldport and walked through their small outdoor weekly market.  I bought a couple of pastries from a lady that were delicious.DSC00321DSC00322

We saw one lighthouse…did not look like any lighthouse I have ever seen before.  Since I do not have internet access at home I have not been able to find out why it appears so strange.  Sorry, not a good picture.

We had to put our hand our hands in the Pacific.

We made it to our destination of Florence…what a nice place, I really liked it.  We stopped off at the casino for lunch and made a very small deposit at the slot machines then on to the Fred Meyer store…one of my very favorite places.   A good day.

Moving on.

The Oregon Coast & Tillamook Cheese

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Today is our friend Richard Shepherd’s birthday so Happy To You…yesterday was my sister Susan’s birthday…you know she’s older than me but she’s not as old as Bob.  Actually Susan and I are the same age for 7 days and then she has her birthday and gains a year on me. When I called her yesterday to wish her Happy Birthday she informed that their neighbor had killed a rattlesnake in his yard…this is why I don’t stay in Texas in the summer.   OMG, I would die if I had to contend with snakes, especially those that make that funny noise with their tails.

Enough of that nonsense…today was our day off so we had decided we were going head west to the coast and then go north with Tillamook, OR being our destination.  We became acquainted with Tillamook cheese and ice cream a couple of years ago when we went to Alaska.  We don’t get Tillamook in the south…we have to settle for that old Blue Bell ice cream (we stand in Texas when we say that name).  Anyway, we are excited to be in the land of Tillamook ice cream and cheese and Frey Meyer grocery stores.

Let me just say that the temp hovered between 48 and 52 degrees and it only stopped raining for a few minutes at a time today…this is the Oregon I came to see.  Enjoy.DSC00228DSC00230DSC00231DSC00232DSC00237DSC00241DSC00300DSC00301DSC00303

And then there was Tillamook.DSC00247DSC00254DSC00255DSC00256DSC00258

I really thought her entire job consisted of cleaning this one area over and over again.

Sometimes it helps if you hold your butt with both hands…sometimes it doesn't.

Sorry for the blurred picture but I was trying to show the block of cheese shooting out of the machine into the plastic bag.

DSC00285

Bob says they don’t have ice cream so why even go in…they have wine!
