Delta Junction, AK Sunday June 21, 2009

Okay, well first of all my post entitled Delta Junction should have read Haines Junction…my bad.  When you have seen one Junction you have seen them all.

We pulled out of Tok on Sunday, June 21 and drove to Delta Junction which is about 100 miles north of Tok.  We began the Alaska highway in Dawson Creek at mile 0 and we finished at Delta Junction at mile 1422.  This is the northern most point of the Alaska highway.  We had to stop at the visitor’s center for some photo ops and Bob got to pose with the state bird of Alaska…you might know it as a mosquito.094 086 088 091 092 093

We drove about 8 miles north of Delta Junction where we were going to spend the night at a park area.  Located at this park was an historical roadhouse known as Rika’s Roadhouse.  This roadhouse used to be frequented by travelers going up and down the Tanana River.

When we pulled into the camping area, remember there are 3 of us in Tiffin motor homes travelling together, we found 2 more Tiffin motor homes.  These 2 rigs were owned by people from Florida who we had met earlier in Tok.  It looks like we were attending a mini Tiffin rally.095

We wandered around the grounds of Rika’s Roadhouse and had our lunch in their restaurant.  It was doubtful for a minute if Bob was actually going to be able to get his sandwich into his mouth! 099

The grounds were very pretty.098 107 108 110 112

We heard that one of the 2 dairies in Alaska was just a short drive from Rika’s so we decided to pay them a visit.  Don, the owner of Northern Lights Dairy was so nice to give us a tour of their facility even though it was Sunday afternoon.  Of course we all had to take some of their ice cream home with us.  They only make three flavors…vanilla, chocolate and strawberry and they only sell to the markets in Delta Junction and Fairbanks.113 114 115 117 118 119 120 125

Here are our guys, Bob, the owner Don, Mark and Joe as we get ready to leave the dairy.127

And this one taken at 5:30 AM.  Right now there are only about 3.5 hours of darkness but it never really gets absolutely dark.133

We, fortunately, have had no problem sleeping with this much daylight because we have been able to keep the bedroom very dark.

Right next to the camping area we got our first view of the Alaska pipeline.097

The next day we headed for Fairbanks…we hear we might be able to get TV there!

Moving on.
