We arrived in Fairbanks on Monday, June 22 and are staying at Road’s End RV park which is actually located in North Pole, AK…a suburb of Fairbanks.
The light poles and other structures are fashioned as candy canes.
Of course we had to visit Santa Claus House to look at all their goodies…luckily they did not have anything I could not live without. There were a couple of guys that I got to flirt with…
But then I got to sit on the lap of my main man…
We even got to see some reindeer…but unfortunately Rudolph was spending the summer in Florida.
And one little guy in training.
We met this gentleman at the Fred Meyer’s store. I hope you can see his moustache…he has been working on it for 20 years and he participates in international competitions. He just took 2nd place out of 400 entries in a competition a couple of months ago.
The next morning Mark, Sue, Bob and I headed out to Pioneer Park. Joe and Loretta were still dealing with cranky jacks so they were off to an RV dealer. We arrived at the park and were able to take the train around the park before the rain drove us indoors.
Sue says “Please, can we go around again?”
I met this neat lady in the art center but I have to say she was not the friendliest person I have encountered.
Today we headed downtown to the Visitors Center and stumbled into the Council Headquarters for the native American population. What a treat was in store for us. The display of items was not large but it was great!
This is a bag made from a Moose bladder.
This contraption is used to catch fish. It just sort of scoops them up out of the water and dumps them into a basket. Only the native Americans in Alaska have the right to use this type of device. This is just a model and it is sitting on a stand that is not actually used.
And the rain continues…and the high was 49 degrees today!
Onward and upward to the University of Alaska at Fairbanks museum. We had heard so much about this museum and this was a perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon. It was every bit as good as we had been told. Bob and I spent about 4 hours there and only saw a portion of it. Here’s Bob with Otto. He checked in at 8’9” and 1250 pounds…Otto that is, not Bob.
Some of the gold “nuggets” and other items. What a beauty this guy was.An Arctic fox.
A rather large copper nugget.Beautiful beadwork done by the Athabascan people.
This is a traditional kuspuck worn by the women…Susan Didelot is looking for one to add to her summer wardrobe.
After we left the museum, I dropped Bob off at the RV park and I went over to the local Safeway to pick up a few things. I could not resist sharing with you some of the items that were for sale…please understand that these items did not end up in my basket. Be sure you look at the prices…
And with that I am…
Moving on.
