We headed south from Anchorage and arrived in Kasilof, on the Kenai peninsula, on Wednesday. We are about 15 miles south of Soldotna.
Soldotna is a small community, not sure how many people, but it has 2 grocery stores, Safeway and Fred Myers. I love places that have a decent grocery. This area is famous for the Kenai River…and that means salmon! As we drove through Soldotna we saw that canopies had been set up in one area of town where they were having a sale of some sort. As soon as we got set up in the rv park, Bob and I drove back to see what was going on. It was a small, very small, market. Some crafts and one lady with produce…she had tomatoes for $6.00 a lb. Needless to say I did not buy any tomatoes.
I did buy a couple of things from the Pampered Chef lady. I was glad to see her there. They also had a petting zoo.
We talked to a young lady that rescues dogs and trains them as sled dogs. She had one of her dogs with her. She was selling shirts and caps with their logo to raise money to take care of the dogs.
Right past this area there were steps leading down to a boardwalk that ran along the Kenai River. As I said, this is the area that people come to for salmon fishing.
This guy was sitting on a street corner…I bet he gets lots of work.
We found another spot on the river where we saw people fishing.
We drove over to the town of Kenai which is about 25 miles from here and found the Russian Orthodox Church. The priest was leaving as we drove by. We will go back to the church later so we can see the inside.
We don’t have the fireweed down here but we do have the lupine. They remind me of the Texas bluebonnets.
And yet more river shots with people fishing. Different location.
Mark and Joe have been fishing but with no luck until today. Yeah…Mark caught his first salmon. Bob had gone with the guys and said it was so exciting…it was a real fight for Mark to land it.
Salmon for dinner tonight!
Moving on.
